Ever wondered what goal getters do differently? People you know who crush every goal they set. People you only know from afar, who seem to have and do it all. It’s not karma and it’s not luck. You may even be surprised to learn that they aren’t always the highest skilled in their field or area of success. They’re the ones who keep going no matter what stands in their way.
Let’s dive into what those who achieve their wildest dreams do differently.
#1 They Face Their Fears
While they may seem fearless, the most successful people you know have just as many fears and concerns as you. The difference is, they don’t let their fears hold them back. Whether consciously or subconsciously, they focus more on what can go right than all that might go wrong.
In fact, when things don’t go as planned, they understand that it’s an inevitable part of the process. Yes, they get discouraged, and their fear may slow things down—but they keep going.
#2 They Start Before They’re Ready
High achievers know that the “perfect” time is a myth. Even if there is a time when their schedule may be a bit lighter, they know new obstacles may arise. They want to get where they’re going sooner rather than later. So, they dive in headfirst, even when their schedule is jampacked or stress is high.
Getting started is often the hardest part. But they know that they deserve to achieve their heart’s desires, so they begin.
#3 They’re Clear and Specific
When inspiration strikes, goal getters may dive in without a clear objective in mind. This is part of their innovation process. But at some point, they pull back and refine their vision. They find their “why”. Why it’s important to them, and if relevant, how achieving their goal will help others.
Then, they use a planner or goal organizer to map out a measurable action plan. This often includes milestones to measure their progress and give them something to celebrate along the way.
#4 They Ask For Help
Those who consistently achieve their goals know they can’t go it alone. They are co-creators who set their ego aside and ask for help. More specifically, they know what they do best, and that’s where they should invest most of their time, energy, and resources.
For the things that are new or aren’t their strong suit, they determine what they need to learn, and they start learning. They also optimize their time and accelerate their results by delegating tasks and hiring external experts.
#5 Mistakes Don’t Keep Them Down
Goal getters aren’t immune to frustration and disappointment. When they make a mistake, hit a roadblock, or an unexpected challenge arises—they keep moving forward. They don’t ignore their feelings, they acknowledge and process them. They analyze what went wrong and why and identify how they can do better next time. If they can’t figure out where things went wrong, they seek an outside perspective.
Even if they press pause for a bit to regroup and get back on track, they find the lesson to be learned, revise their strategy—and keep moving forward.
#7 Goal Getters Know When to Move On
One aspect of bringing dreams to life that we don’t hear enough about is knowing when to let go. This doesn’t necessarily mean letting go of the entire dream. Maybe your approach isn’t working, and you need to come at it from a completely different direction. Or maybe part of the plan isn’t working and needs to be revised or replaced.
There are also times when letting go of a dream is the best option. Almost every high achiever has let go of at least a few plans. Not out of fear of failure, but because it’s what is best to move forward in other ways.
A few reasons you may want to let a dream go are:
- You’ve realized the dream you’re pursuing isn’t your own.
- External factors or circumstances have changed significantly.
- It’s what you used to want, but you have a new dream.
#8 One at a Time
Goal getters dream big and often have goals they want to achieve over the next 1, 3, and 5 years. They know they can do it all, but to do their best they must pursue one dream at a time. Or one dream in the same area at a time. Prioritizing their time ensures they aren’t spread too thin.
For example, they may pursue one professional goal and one personal goal at the same time. Or two overlapping personal goals at the same time. Even serial entrepreneurs typically launch one new business at a time. That is unless they have a team large enough to launch multiple businesses at once.
#9 They Celebrate Their Wins
No matter how big the goal is and how much farther they must go, they keep their motivation high by celebrating the wins along the way. Whether it’s a milestone, a new skill, or overcoming an unexpected challenge—they celebrate.
From taking a few minutes to pause and reflect on what they’ve achieved, sharing it with a friend, or rewarding themselves in a tangible way. Celebration and reward are especially important for complex goals and goals that will take more than a year to achieve.
#10 They Evolve
Goal getters understand that their dreams are evolving and that they must be agile. Along the way, a variety of internal and external factors and circumstances may change. They’re willing to adjust their plan, evolve what finished looks like, and sometimes—full-on pivot.
The pandemic demonstrated awe-inspiring methods of pivoting. Businesses across every industry had to rapidly take their business online. From finally getting around to creating an e-commerce store to creating a range of digital products and services. Those who failed to pivot didn’t survive.
